#LIFTVIPs shared selfies: win with Atlas Café, The Waverley Hotel, and Gladstone Brewing!

April 11, 2017 by Leif Jason

We love our LIFT Community Partners – and we love the support they give us as we promote entrepreneurs on Vancouver Island. We also love the LIFT VIPs who are the heart of our entrepreneur community. So this month we’re hosting a “shared selfie” contest that’ll win someone – and the LIFT VIP they choose – each a $25 gift card at Atlas Café (April), The Waverley Hotel (May), and Gladstone Brewing (June).

How to win

  1. Find a LIFT VIP (there are almost 100 of them today, with more coming on board every week – maybe you this week? Call meat 250-792-1408. It’s time to grow your business – and be featured in someone’s shared selfie!)
  2. Post a shared selfie with them to Twitter, Instagram, and/or Facebook.
  3. Be sure to include a note about this particular LIFT VIP, as well as the #LIFTVIP#WeAreYQQ tags
  4. That’s it! You and your LIFT VIP could each win a $25 gift card to Atlas Café, The Waverley Hotel, or Gladstone Brewing. Yum!

We’ll be announcing the April winner in early May.

Our #WeAreYQQ Spring Party is about startups, money, raising funds for the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market – and loads of fun!

March 17, 2017 by Leif Jason

On March 30 we’re hositng another of our signature entrepreneur parties. The focus this time: money and startups, fundraising for the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market – and fun! Get your tickets by “suggested donation” now!

TICKET BY SUGGESTED DONATION TO CVFM

It takes money to make money. But how do entrepreneurs get the money they need to start and grow their businesses? That’s the question panellists will be answering during the Financial Marketplace portion of the party at Prime Chophouse.

But we encourage people to show up at 6pm and take advantage of Prime Chophouse’s “Community Throwback” dinner offer. Every Community Throwback dinner generates $5 for the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market.

Then enjoy the Financial Marketplace as it starts with a keynote on startups and money by speaker Keith Ippel of global startup school Spring U. Then startup finance resouce people Adam Speigel of BDC, David Sawyer of equity crowdfunder Consider Funding, Mina Haghini of Futurpreneur, and Marc Crane of Community Futures will pitch what they do. After their pitches, Ippel will moderate a panel discussion and a public Q&A. The event also features special guests comedienne Kitty Pitt, and DJ em.ash.

Money talk – and fundraising

Previous #WeAreYQQ parties have raised funds for EDAS: Everybody Deserves A Smile and Startup Comox Valley. This time the focus is on the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market.

Meyer references studies by the USFDA that show the local food sector is one of the number one ways to grow the local economy. “The Market is our number one ‘local food’ business incubator,” he says. “Want to see our local economy grow? Let’s help this organisation thrive!”

To add to the mix, Prime Chophouse is inviting you to come early and enjoy a Community Throwback dinner to support the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market. $5 from every Community Throwbacks dinner goes to the Market.

But it’s not just about the money. It’s also about the fun!

LIFT’s Hans Peter Meyer says that growing a startup community isn’t just about getting tools, resources, and money together. It’s also about getting people together to have fun.

“We’re always looking for new ways to mix things up,” Meyer says, of the #WeAreYQQPartyCrew headed up by “party boss” Leanne Zdebiak-Eni. For this party, the features are a standup routine on startups by local comedienne Kitty Pitt, an evening of “low slung techno” by DJ em.ash, and, as always, $1000s in prizes from LIFT VIP businesses. “We’ve got gift cards from Atlas Café, Gladstone Brewing, Sure Copy Courtenay, My Tech Guys, Panther Workwear, Studio IPF: Inner Pursuit Fitness, LIFT – and many more,” Zdebiak-Eni says. “They’re all up for grabs via social media games that generate loads of fun, and help promote local businesses.”

How to get your tickets

Registration for #WeAreYQQ Spring Party & Financial Marketplace is by “suggested donation.” If you need help registering, please call HPM at 250-792-1408 or Naz at 250-615-6516.

The Amy Criss Report on #WeAreYQQ Winter Party, featuring Dr. Sean Wise

February 3, 2017 by Leif Jason

[ Amy Criss is a Social Media Intern with LIFT. You’ll find her posts on Twitter and on Instagram. This is her first blog post for us.

Lead + Inspire. Fuel Talent. #WeAreYQQ Winter Party

How incredible.

On January 25, 2017 I was part of #WeAreYQQ Winter Party. This was a two-part fundraising event for Startup Comox Valley, hosted by LIFT. The first part happened at NIC’s Stan Hagen Theatre. The headliner: Dr. Sean Wise venture capitalist, university professor, entrepreneur guru, past Dragons Den Advisor, and Startup Canada Fellow. He was on Vancouver Island as part of a tour he’s doing of startup communities in Canada, organized by Startup Canada.

Part 1: Dr. Sean Wise at NIC

7PM: the show starts. Bob Wells, aka @ComoxValleyBob on Twitter, gave a quick intro about Startup Canada and Startup Comox Valley. Then Sean Wise took the stage.

Dr. Wise gave the room such motivation! The world of building a business has changed. We now know the steps to success. “If you don’t know how to do something – Google it.” If you really want to grow a business he offered the “100 Steps to Success” pathway. He invited everyone to hand him a business card so that he and his team can help Comox Valley entrepreneurs start their businesses right. “If you … would like more information, please visit us online (www.100Steps2Startup.com) or send us an email (sales@100Steps2Startup.com). We’d love to hear from you.”

He was so right: there is no better time than now to be your own boss, start you own wave. And if by chance the wave takes awhile or crashes, dust off your surf board and hit the next one! The time is now. The Internet has made anything available. Don’t be lazy, work hard!

Part 2: The After Party

Our next stop was Prime Chop House in Courtenay. Talk about a wave. They had the lounge prepared for a crew full of zest to arrive, but there were about 70 in the wave that arrived!

The atmosphere was fantastic! DJ Adil kept the vibes going with some awesome jams. Quickly after the group was settled, a few guest speaks by Leif Jason and Vivian Vaillant uplifted and motivated the gang even more. Throw in a couple networking games by Leanne Zdebiak-Eni and Annie L Danko, and boom! a room full of new friends exchanging names, numbers and businesses.

One thing that Dr. Sean Wise emphasized for those who are just starting out their journey: Join your entrepreneur community, find a mentor. That is exactly what LIFT Comox Valley accomplished at this after party.

Being a LIFT Social Media Intern

I feel so incredibly lucky to have had #WeAreYQQ Winter Party as my first engagement with LIFT. I know friends who are involved. But I had no idea it was this big. To discover that there is a unique group of individuals whose common goal is to “LIFT” the local economy and support entrepreneurs is astounding.

I’ll be reporting on lots more LIFT events over the coming weeks and months. Search for the #WeAreYQQ tag and you’ll find my posts, and posts about lots of makers, creatives, and entrepreneurs who are “making shift happen” in our communities.

Take a look at what’s coming up via the online events listings at https://liftstartup.wpengine.com/events/.
In the meantime: Think Bigger! Think Brighter. LIFT!

Startup fever, money, & fuelling entrepreneur fires!

February 1, 2017 by Leif Jason

In 2014 I imagined a Comox Valley on fire with entrepreneurial passion. I was working with startups in Vancouver. I was enjoying the heat of their passion for creating businesses, for collaboration, for fuelling each others’ ambitions.

Fast forward two years. September 28, 2016.  The first #WeAreYQQ PitchFest. Three judges with startup, seven entrepreneurs pitching, $5000 in prizes. 120+ people are in the room pumped with “startup fever.” I’m smiling.

Why?

Basic community economic development smarts says: start where you’re at. Grow local businesses to meet local needs. Fuel local talent to reach for bigger markets. Inspire grassroots, entrepreneurial, direct economic action.

Bureaucrats can’t make this shift happen. They can play an important role in the “entrepreneurial ecosystem,” as startup communities guru Brad Feld says. But it’s the entrepreneurs who make shift happen.

Startup communities

Starting and running a business is stressful. It’s risky. Only other entrepreneurs can who know what it’s like, lying awake at night wondering how to pay the bills. The research says: entrepreneurs who support each other we are more likely to succeed.

A year ago the LIFT team proposed to start a Startup Canada chapter. We wanted to be part of the cross-Canada network of entrepreneurs that Startup Canada is building. Thanks to efforts Leif Jason, Kelsey Wood, co-chair Bob Wells, and a host of other entrepreneurs, SCV is now helping to make our local “entrepreneur ecosystem” a little more functional for the grassroots creatives and entrepreneurs in our economy.

On January 25, 2017, LIFT hosted the #WeAreYQQ Winter Party. One of our regular and (un)usual shindigs, it was also a fundraiser SCV. With support from Startup Canada, the event featured Dr. Sean Wise. Venture capitalist, Ryerson U’s Professor of Entrepreneurship, and former Dragons’ Den advisor, Wise presented on why now is the best time to be an entrepreneur. Wise delivered. Big time.

Our community has a history of self-starters. People who choose this place, then figure out a way to survive here. Wise showed us tools to turn our entrepreneur bent into something bigger. If you were in the audience, I’ve already sent you his follow-up email with tools and tips. If you weren’t’ there, send me a note at connect@hanspetermeyer.com.

Feeding the fire

At LIFT, we’re feeding the fire with our twice-monthly BizOnDeck workshops. Now it’s time for the next level. Time to talk about money.

Curtis Scoville, LIFT VIP and financial planner, suggested LIFT do some work on this. He said lack of money is keeping some Comox Valley businesses from being what they can be, and that many business owners are afraid to talk to potential partners, lenders, or investors about their business financial plan or cash flow.” He suggested LIFT could be doing something about that.

#WeAreYQQ Spring Party & Financial Marketplace

LIFT is about “new ideas.” With Curtis’ help we worked on the Financial Marketplace idea. On March 30 we’re hosting another entrepreneur party – and this time we’ll be bringing some new ideas about money into this entrepreneur community. We’ll have Keith Ippel, of global startup school Spring U, as our keynote. Plus a few others, like BDC, and Island equity crowdfunding experts from Consider Funding.

Our goal: to fuel your fire.

LIFT: Leading, inspiring, and fuelling talent. We’re looking for ways to help entrepreneurs make shift happen.

Want to grow your business? Join us on March 30 for the #WeAreYQQ Spring Party & Financial Marketplace. Tickets: WeAreYQQParty.ca.

Why it’s not 1997 any more. Talking to Sean Wise about being an entrepreneur in 2017

December 14, 2016 by Leif Jason

On January 25 LIFT Comox Valley hosts the annual #WeAreYQQ Winter Party. This year we’re featuring our (un)usual mix of fun, games, prizes – and music by DJ Adil. Thanks to support from Startup Canada we’re also hosting keynote speaker Dr. Sean Wise. Ryerson Professor of Entrepreneurship, Dr. Wise is also a Startup Canada Fellow. The following is an excerpt of our 25-minute interview. The full interview can be seen on the video (apologies for uneven sound quality).

HPM: Tell us a little about yourself

Dr. Sean Wise (SW): Professionally, I’m Professor of Entrepreneurship at Ryerson University. I was recently named Startup Canada’s National Fellow for Startup Communities. The fellowship is the umbrella for the national tour I’m on this coming year, including a stop in the Comox Valley.

HPM: What does a professor know about entrepreneurship?

SW: People ask me, can a university “teach” entrepreneurship. The answer is “No.” All I can do is facilitate the learning of entrepreneurship. Ryerson does a good job of giving students an environment where they can learn how to develop their interests in being entrepreneurs, and be successful.

On a personal note, I had my first startup at 13 when I was dissatisfied with what my employer at the time was doing with waste food. My mother said told me, “If you didn’t like it, don’t work for other people.” So, at an early age I was finding unmet market needs, then creating ways to address them.

I took my first startup public at 31. Since 1999 I’ve been a seed-stage venture capitalist, deploying about $2B. In the last 2 years, my fund Ryerson Futures, has supported 23 startups and funded 13.

I’ve also had five seasons with Dragons’ Den. I’ve crossed this country several times, and visited with more than 20 startup communities.

HPM: Tell me about the Startup Canada tour. Why are you doing this? And, how can your tour help emerging entrepreneurs in places like the Comox Valley?

SW: As a tenured professor I earned a sabbatical. I’ve decided to spend this time working in startup communities to help inspire emerging or latent startup entrepreneurs. As part of that effort, I’m working with Startup Canada to deliver a keynote, “Why now is the greatest time to be an Entrepreneur,” across this great country.

I’m also sharing a new tool for first founders, www.100Steps2Startup.com, which is an easy-to-follow program for people who want to build a successful startup. It’s based on the proven Lean Startup methodology, and includes 100 short instructional videos and 80 actionable worksheets designed to lead you step-by-step from initial idea to revenue generation with as little risk as possible.

HPM: What are the biggest challenges facing entrepreneurs in small town and rural Canada?

SW: 21st century entrepreneurship is driven by customer-centric innovation. This requires founders to be able to get face time with early adopters. This may be difficult if your early adopters don’t live in your small town. But with high-speed broadband and video conferencing it’s difficult but not impossible.

Similarly, finding co-founders, marketing to early adopters, etc has been greatly effected by the rise of connectivity. In the 21st Century you know longer have to move to Silicon Valley to launch a high-growth venture.

HPM: What is the 1 thing/ what are 3 things that small town / rural entrepreneurs need to do to get past these challenges?

SW: It’s not 1997 anymore. Small town and rural entrepreneurs need to embrace the startup leanings of the last two decades. Today the path to startup success has been discovered, quantified, and mapped. Today, you can learn from Uber, Tinder, and the like and leverage those learnings for your benefit.

To overcome challenges, not only do founders need high-speed internet access, they need to adopt the lean startup mindset, and combine it with extreme dedication.

HPM: Your keynote on January 25 is about “Why now is the greatest time to be an entrepreneur.” Is it the greatest time to be an entrepreneur in small town and rural Canada?

SW: Yes. Here are four reasons why:

  • 1) The cost to launch has dropped from $5M to $5K. Funding is no longer a barrier to starting a startup.
  • 2) There are more than 3 billion people online, all of them are buying something.
  • 3) All the tools you need are available regardless of location. Today, all you need is a smartphone and internet access.
  • 4) The path is known. Today, the path to startup success has been discovered, quantified, and mapped. Today, you can learn from businesses that have gone from zero to $1B in five years and leverage those learnings for your benefit.

HPM: Is there anything else you think is helpful for us here on Vancouver Island?

SW: Yes. We now have proven that there is a correlation between startup success and involvement in the local startup ecosystem. What’s called a “startup community.” Founders need to immerse themselves in the community and leverage all the benefits, networks, knowledge, and experience available.

Why? Because being a founder is hard. Don’t make it harder by:

  • 1) going it alone;
  • 2) reinventing the wheel;
  • 3) thinking your startup is different than all those that came before you.

Be part of your startup community.

….

Dr. Sean Wise’s keynote at #WeAreYQQ Winter Party is generously supported by Startup Canada. Proceeds from the event will go to support Startup Comox Valley. Tickets are available online via Picatic, a Canadian startup that’s having a global impact in the ticketing and event solutions space. Get yours today at WeAreYQQParty.ca.

That was fun! Festive Cheer – and what comes next

November 24, 2016 by Leif Jason

Festive Cheer: a fun and successful evening! If you were with us, you know what I’m talking about.

Chantal Stefan’s new presentation about Everybody Deserves A Smile (EDAS) was super. It helped propel a very excited auction by Adam Duncan (hats off to Adam for that!). We had great items, including “Date Nights” (thanks to #WeAreYQQ rockstars like Atlas Cafe, The White Whale, and the Sid Williams Theatre), a limited edition print from Brian Scott, and a very cool “Moonshiner’s Experience” for four from Wayward Distillation House.

Before that, Step and Robin from Lucky Village Enterprises ran a social media game that gave away $100s in prizes, and Leanne from Studio IPF: Inner Pursuit Fitness gave away $100s more with her Mayhem Mixup game. Meanwhile, sparkly party goers were getting their festive portraits by Ron Pogue Photography (by $2 donation to EDAS) by the fire at Prime Chophouse. Great stuff!

I love it when we can get great exposure for the dozens of businesses – and the dozens more sponsors, partners, and subscribers – who make our events such a hit. Your prizes and your  by fuelling our games and our giveaways. One of my favourite quotes of the evening, “I make more coming to these parties than I pay in tickets!” Add to that, we were raising awareness and funds for EDAS and it was an amazing evening. Thanks to all who made it happen, including Festive Sponsors like SunLife Financial, Jabin Postal Films, 50th Parallel PR, and Festive Angels like My Tech Guys and Eatmore Sprouts.

If you’d like your business featured in our fun and games, send me a note and we’ll make that shift happen!
